The Angel Inn
Brand identity
The Angel, a 15th Century coaching inn set in the historic village of Stoke-by-Nayland in the heart of the Suffolk countryside and the Dedham Vale, is effortlessly steeped in history. Today the carefully restored inn offers inspiring food in a very special environment (believe me, it’s beautiful). This pairing of tradition with contemporary values is central to The Angel Inn, and this is reflected in the branding which is unpretentious, clear and timeless.
The Angel wordmark is set in Yport—a wedged serif—its letterforms derived from calligraphy and its bevelled capitals reminiscent of the traditional craft of the lettercutter; chiselled lettering cut straight into the stone of a Suffolk village. The wordmark and typeface will help enable The Angel Inn to (quietly) stand out amidst a crowded market.
As an aside, it’s believed that John Constable visited The Angel Inn on several occasions when making sketches and paintings of St Mary’s Church in the village. If he ordered the Full Tasting Menu—as I did—he wouldn’t have been disappointed.
I produced a Guidelines document for my client to implement the identity online, on clothing and crockery, and in print.
