Hilary Paynter
Moving Mountains exhibition
It’s was a joy collaborating with celebrated British wood engraver Hilary Paynter on her solo exhibition Moving Mountains, which took place in June 2024 at Bankside Gallery, London.
Moving Mountains showed Hilary’s finely detailed print collages alongside breathtaking landscapes, political works and illustrations she has created with poets and writers including Simon Armitage, Carol Ann Duffy and Max Porter. She’s also worked on album covers for Blossoms which, for an octogenarian, is pretty impressive in my book.
For the show I designed the exhibition identity, posters, banners, invitations, price list and gallery graphics. I kept things simple: a colour palette of red, black and white; a typemark shaped like the summit of a mountain set in Saans because Hilary prefers a sans serif, and who am I to argue?
In 2023, Hilary was quite rightly recognised for her life-long commitment to the arts and awarded an MBE. She lives and works down the hill from me in Bath.
Images shown here include a detail of Cats in the Garden, a new, large-scale wood engraving collage.
