Moment in Time
Huddersfield Town AFC
180pp casebound book

This beautifully-produced casebound photobook captures the rollercoaster ride that was Huddersfield Town’s first season in the English Premier League, their return to top-flight football after 45 years kicking around the lower divisions. Moment in Time follows the fans home and away, looks at how the community is intricately linked to the Club, highlights the characters within the team and shows the raw passion and emotion in the stands. Photojournalist Jude had been following the drama and would supply hundreds of brilliantly evocative images taken during the 2017–18 season.

The brief was formulated in the back of a car having watched the Club secure its place in the Prem after a nerve-wracking draw away at Chelsea on 9 May, 2018. Jude pitched (pun intended) my idea and visual to the Club the following day and we were off, printing at Kingsbury Press in Doncaster on 3 July. Kingsbury’s attention to detail included finishing the binding with blue and white striped head and tail bands (the Club’s shirt colours).

I created a narrative by grouping Jude’s photographs into ten chapters, drawn from the values which formed the DNA of the Club. An eleventh—Conversation—focusses on the close proximity of home and away fans at the John Smith’s Stadium, and the ‘interaction’ between the two. Where appropriate (and repeatable), football chants were typeset to add humour, or key words were used to support images.

For me this was a dream project where all the stars aligned. I have supported Town over many years and experienced the highs and the lows. Mostly the lows.
